Similar to the recent storm hit the northwest the prior day, City swept the visitors aside at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil triumph for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their championship potential as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This outcome represented back-to-back league setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the top team with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capability to manage league and European soccer with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed issue since they secured entry to the Champions League. Considering the fixture list, it always appeared this was the week that would truly test this fortitude. Unfortunately for the visitors, they looked tired from start to finish, the landmark win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

The United manager had attempted to make changes with a several changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

City, in contrast, have no similar workload issues. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The trouble started to build for Skinner and his side from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose potent offense manipulated and tore United open with a superb first half display that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.

Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a rapid turnover in possession saw Lauren Hemp afforded the space to fire a attempt home from range.

Second Half

The clearest change came from Skinner at the interval as Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- City player Jess Park came most likely to score, hitting the woodwork, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to produce a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have added to their advantage when a delightful Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to defeat any team who placed above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to place them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
