A recent study indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
