Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
