Sam Fender was awarded the Mercury Prize recently in Newcastle

The artist has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 award prize money to the MVT, which works to protect the UK's grassroots concert spaces.

He was presented with the prize on mid-October as his third album People Watching was named the top album of the last 12 months.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I would not have achieved this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I did around the region, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said Sam Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have shut down – about 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, major artists including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also joined in, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to assist thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

The donation assisted venues that were dealing with possible closure due to challenges stemming from water damage, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces received funding support in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that directly benefitted performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from shows in major spaces supports the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

He is not the first artist to donate his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

When the band won the prize in 1996 for their record the album, lead singer Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would give their winnings to the charity the charity.

During 2002, musician Ms Dynamite split her bounty among several charities, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed updated gear," the artist explained to the media.

In recent years, the band gave their winnings to the community center that supported their group, as well as other independent music bodies.

And winners that year the group donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked singer Heather Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning affected another person's life."

Last week, the MVT shared it had rescued several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The Joiners in the city and the second in Bristol were bought under the community ownership program, which is funded by a national body and music fans who purchase "shares" in the buildings.
